Florida Attorney General Suing Opioid Manufacturers and Distributors

Futures welcomed Maxine Bentzel and CBS12 to our campus to discuss Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s action to file a legal complaint against several of the country’s largest pharmaceutical companies.

To provide more insight, we’ve highlighted a few key points:

  • Tuesday’s filing was coordinated with 5 other states: Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Tennessee and Texas
  • 433 suits brought by cities and counties were consolidated under the federal jurisdiction of U.S. District Judge Dan Polster in Cleveland, Ohio.
  • New York, California and Massachusetts are also expected to file similar actions
  • Pam Bondi filed in Pasco County, Florida. A single pharmacy in Hudson, a Pasco County town of 34,000 people, purchased 2.2 million opioid pills in 2011 (64 pills for every resident).
  • Attorneys Drake Martin and Rich Newsome will be key components of Florida’s legal representation, They previously handled the BP oil spill and the Takata air bag case, respectively.
  • 4 distributors are named: AmerisourceBergen, McKesson, Cardinal, and Mallinckrodt
