Pain Management and Addiction

The Chronic Pain Treatment Program at Futures of Palm Beach

Drugs and alcohol are often used to mask pain – both emotional and physical, but substance abuse can affect neuroreceptors in the brain that help to interpret how we feel pain. Chronic musculoskeletal pain is defined by the United States Centers for Disease Control as “pain that persists for greater than 3 months or beyond the expected healing time frame.”

Chronic pain can become a vicious cycle with biological, psychological, emotional, and social considerations.  When an individual is recovering from substance abuse disorder, along with chronic pain, the rehabilitation program should be approached by a multi-disciplinary healthcare team. At Futures of Palm Beach, we treat the whole person by addressing pain in the body through a comprehensive approach in which we provide:

  1. Comprehensive Physical Therapy Programming
  2. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain
  3. Exceptional Medical Care & Detoxification
  4. Dietary & Nutrition Consultation

Physical Therapy

With our partner, Advanced Therapy & Wellness (AT&W), we offer a holistic wellness and rehabilitation program. Integrating AT&W’s evidence-based musculoskeletal and biopsychosocial treatment interventions compliments our multidisciplinary treatment approach, and augments treatment to aid in the recovery from addictive and co-occurring disorders.

Initially, a physical therapist will provide an evaluation of the individual’s neuromusculoskeletal system to determine the underlying cause of the initial pain or injury. Evidence based manual therapy and exercise interventions are then used to reduce pain and facilitate the recovery process. Pain neuroscience education is also delivered by the physical therapist to help the client understand the neurophysiology of pain and how it relates to their body. This education, along with a tailored exercise program has been demonstrated to improve outcomes for clients with chronic pain and enhances their quality of life.

Each client will receive a customized PT Plan of Care addressing the specific musculoskeletal dysfunction and impairments associated with the respective substance of addiction. AT&W experts work with the clinical and medical care teams to implement the customized physical therapy plan for each individual.

A typical Plan of Care may include:

  • Client Centered Graded Exercise Progression and Exposure
  • Recovery, Prevention and Rehabilitation of Existing Injuries
  • Motor Imagery Exercises to Re-train Nervous System on How to Control Pain
  • Cardiovascular Training
  • Functional Stretching and Yoga
  • Acupuncture
  • Aquatic Therapy
  • Non-Weight Bearing Exercises, Movement Programs/Activities
  • Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Simulation for Pain Reduction
  • Objective Pre-Post Functional Tests to Demonstrate Improvement
  • Home Exercise Program to Continue Treatment After Discharge

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain

Our program allows patients to reconnect with their bodies and evaluate their level of pain from a sober perspective through the guidance and education of a professionally trained staff. Our skilled team helps clients to create a sustainable plan to promote both physical wellness and emotional balance. This balance is a vital part of a strong foundation for both recovery and a healthy, vibrant life beyond treatment.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, (CBT) is an active treatment approach that focuses on the relationships between thoughts, emotions and behaviors. Studies have provided evidence identifying that CBT can improve functioning and quality of life for those suffering from chronic pain conditions and is an invaluable part of an effective pain track program.

Over the course of 12 CBT sessions, clients will:

  • Understand how to perceive pain and modify the way pain is addressed and viewed
  • Be educated in the ability to identify and change behaviors related to pain and improve coping strategies
  • Alter the mindset to a more positive context to encourage healthy behaviors and habits that will help to improve pain relief over time

Medical Care & Detoxification

The definition of suffering is not understanding the origin of your pain. The first and arguably the most important part of addressing chronic pain with substance abuse is educating the patient on the cause and origin of their pain and how it will be treated. The medical team at Futures will spear head the pain track by initiating a progressively graded detox protocol with an emphasis on the slow taper off of any narcotics. Our medical team is headed by Dr. Gloria Dunkin, a triple-board certified physician with more than 15 years of experience in the addiction treatment field.

Our full-time, on-site medical team of physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners and other skilled clinicians provide 24-hour care and supervision during detox to ensure safety and alleviate withdrawal symptoms as much as possible. Round the clock monitoring in a secure, residential setting by a team who has experience tapering clients off of medications typically prescribed for pain is an advantage of this program.

Dietary & Nutritional Consultation

Futures is implementing the use of proper nutrition and diet to compound the effectiveness of the chronic pain treatment program. Our nutritionist and dietitian work individually with each client to match their preferences with menu items and natural food choices that may produce the desired anti-inflammatory effect to reduce pain.

Our Pain Management program helps clients to reconnect with their bodies and evaluate their pain with a sober perspective. Our team will help you to create a sustainable plan to promote both physical wellness and emotional balance.  This balance is a vital part of a strong foundation for both recovery and a healthy, vibrant life beyond treatment.
